Last time we tuned-in to our favourite radio segment, Gang of Youths almost missed their Like A Version due to a hilarious sticky situation, alas, they delivered, and it was fuckin’ insane, and guess what – so is this week’s.
Joining Triple J hosts Matt and Alex was none other than the Big Scary side-project of Tim Iasnek, #1 Dads who, alongside some special guests including collaborating ‘Return To’ vocalist Tom Snowdon (of Lowlakes fame) and Ainslie Wills, as well as Chris Port and Angus Rigby, the group of talented musicians delivering an astonishing rendition of FKA twigs’ ‘Two Weeks’.
Quite possibly one of the hardest songs to vocally cover, #1 Dads absolutely nailed their rework of the 2014 hit, producing as much intrigue and intensity as the stunning original.
Beginning with Isanek’s hushed whisper “Higher than a motherfucker/dreamin’ of you as my lover'” the multifaceted musician plays a slow, brooding key progression that’s supported by the trio of singers clapping and clicking to the solitary drum-tap percussion as Snowdon’s unforgettable croon takes hold, doing FKA twigs’ vocals complete justice.
This Like A Version embodies everything we love about this weekly radio segment, the group have worked hard to reimagine the track, injecting their own creative spirit into the four minutes to create something that sounds wholly unique and is visually entertaining.
Although our vibes are high right from this incredible cover, there is some sad news to accompany the vid, with Iansek revealing that after two records, #1 Dads “are laying the side project to rest”, but before he does, he’ll be performing three headline shows this July, the dates and ticket info can be seen below.
We must say that we’re blown away each week with the level of talent that’s hosted at Triple J Studios. We’ve already seen some killer Like A Versions this year, including Hiatus Kaiyote’s potential front runner for best of the year, The Bennies killing an Aussie classic, Sticky Fingers supporting a local act and of course, a bold reminder of why the ’90s rule.
