In 2009, the sky turned a blood orange and everyone thought that the world was ending. Where were you when the famous dust storm hit?

September 22, a major dust storm swept over the beloved capital of Australia, Canberra, and everyone woke up, looked out their windows, and said their final prayers.

Come September 23, the storm swept over Brisbane and Sydney, and things were genuinely batshit. Kids stayed home from school, streets were barren and empty, the apocalypse was well and truly now.

So, to celebrate this phenomenal event in our history, 10 years on in the future, here are five classic Aussie songs to make everything feel better about time flying so fast.

1. Natalie Imbruglia – ‘Torn’

Sure it may be a cover but it’s also the best version of this song to exist so…? There really isn’t any argument to be had here.

The sky was torn with glowing orange, and we were all out of faith. Celebrate the Aussie dust storm with a classic.

2. Jimmy Barnes – ‘Working Class Man’

You know that scene where Jimmy Barnes is in front of the fires screaming “working class man”? That was everyone who had to go to work during the dust storm.

3. Daryl Braithwaite – ‘The Horses’

That really is the way it is going to be, little darlin’.

Needless to say this song is a CLASSIC, all caps.

4. Divinyls – ‘I Touch Myself’

Needless to say this classic was probably blasted in the homes of the many across Australia, since we were all couped up in our homes with nowhere to go, and an imminent threat of apocalypse looming above us during the dust storm.

5. AC/DC – ‘It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Want to Rock ‘n’ Roll)

Including Acca Dacca is as clear as the sky during the dust storm. Okay well, the clear wasn’t clear at all, but you get my point.
