They’re going to need a bigger trophy cabinet…

Sydney producer Flume and Perth rockers Tame Impala continued their award-snaffling runs at last night’s 27th Annual ARIA Awards, held at Sydney’s The Star Event Centre, where 22 gongs were handed out to recognise Australia’s best and brightest.

After walking away with the Producer of the Year ARIA early in October, Flume – the musical alias of 22-year-old beatmaker Harley Streten – walked away with another three ARIA Awards at the ceremony (from eight total nominations), taking out the Best Dance Release for his 2012 self-titled debut album, Breakthrough Artist – Release, and the Best Male category, beating out the likes of Paul Kelly, Matt Corby, and Guy Sebastian.

Flume also treated the audience to a live performance of ‘The Greatest View’, his collaboration with Isabella Manfredi of the Preatures, while fellow multiple ARIA winners, Tame Impala, also offered a live rendition of ‘Feels Like We Only Go Backwards’ in a visual spectacular to close the ceremony.

The track is taken from the Kevin Parker-led band’s second album, Lonerism, which after helping the five-piece scoop the pool at the 2013 WAM Awards, earned Tame Impala three major ARIA Awards: Best Rock Album, Album of the Year, and Best Group, in a category featuring Birds Of Tokyo, Boy & Bear, Empire of The Sun, and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

The latter Dark Prince of Australian rock did walk away with two ARIA gongs, with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ 15th studio album Push The Sky Away claiming Best Independent Release and Best Adult Contemporary Album. Push The Sky Away was also recognised as being the band’s first-ever ARIA-topping album in their 30 year history, and as one of 13 Australian albums that went #1 in 2013.

Another #1 being Perth prog powerhouse Karnivool’s Asymmetry, which took out top honours for Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album, but frontman Ian Kenny’s other musical outfit, Birds Of Tokyo, walked away empty-handed despite being nominated in six categories.

The Best Urban Album went to Illy for Bring It Back, triumphing in a hotly-contested field that featured the cream of Aussie hip hop, including releases from Urthboy, Seth Sentry, Horrorshow, and Bliss N Eso, who gave an energetic live performance during the ceremony.

Also performing live on the ARIA stage were singer-songwriter Vance Joy, young rockers Sheppard, as well as pop performances from Award winners Jessica Mauboy, Samantha Jade, plus international guests Alicia Keys and 17-year-old New Zealand sensation, Lorde, capping off a ridiculously successful year with her first ever performance on Australian television (though she didn’t look too pleased about it earlier in the night on the Black Carpet).

The Jezabels frontwoman Hayley Mary partnered with Sally Whitwell to pay homage to deceased Divinyls singer Chrissy Amphlett with a performance of ‘Pleasure and Pain’, while the celebrations also took time to pay respects to ARIA Hall Of Fame Inductee Mr Yunupingu of Yothu Yindi.

Other ARIA Award winners included Russell Morris (for Best Blues And Roots Album), Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson (Best Country Album), Matt Corby (in the publicly voted Song Of The Year category), and Triple J Breakfast hosts Tom & Alex, and Guy Sebastian who won for Best Pop Release and – proving his popularity with the Aussie public – the Best Australian Live Act Award.

Mushroom founder and Frontier Touring boss Michael Gudisnki was honoured with the first-ever ARIA Industry Icon Award, and the duo of Russell Hitchcock and Graham Russell, better known to the world as Aussie soft rock outfit Air Supply, were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

ARIA CEO Dan Rosen said: “2013 has been a remarkable year for Australian music and that was certainly evident with the wealth of talent present in the room,” said ARIA CEO Dan Rosen. “The collection of tonight’s winners and performers shows the amazing talent currently in the Australian music industry.”
