Last year, Australia’s biggest dance music festival got even bigger after Stereosonic expanded to a new format.

After the success of expanding each leg of the national touring festival to two days, Stereosonic 2014 will once again repeat the act, giving five capital servings a double dose of EDM.

The Stereosonic 2014 dates also reveal that the event is also repeating last year’s trick of running two coastal events concurrently. The opening weekend for this year’s edition will see Sydney and Perth running simultaneously on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th November.

The following week will see the lineup headed to South Australia for Friday 5th December, before the Saturday sees Adelaide, Melbourne, and Brisbane all running Stereosonic 2014 on the same day – a potentially nightmarish logistical situation that organisers pulled off to great success last year.

The expansion to the two-day format last year was chiefly to accommodate the enormous lineup, which included some of the world’s topped rank DJs – such as Armin Van Buuren, David Guetta, Nicky Romero, and multi-millionaire Scot Calvin Harris, along with an Aussie contingent that features Empire Of The Sun and more than 300 local acts spread across all five capital cities.

The weekend-long expansion also ruffled the feathers of local council in Perth. Specifically Claremont Council, who after labelling Stereosonic patrons “the worst ever” in 2012, cast further dispersions on festival-goers to the 2013 edition, concerned attendees would rather squat than have the common sense to seek accommodation around the dates of the non-camping event.

The event however, went ahead at Claremont’s RAS Showgrounds without incident. The venues for Stereosonic 2014 have yet to be announced, but early bird tickets are on sale Thursday 13th March through Ticketmaster. The 2014 lineup will be announced in July.

The festival’s ongoing success also saw Stereosonic’s owners, Australia’s Totem OneLove Group, scooped up for $75 million by American investment firm SFX last year, resulting in the newly minted SFX Totem, the buy-out marking one of 52 dance music festivals around the world under SFX’s control.

Stereosonic could also be making a further expansion in the future – to international waters.

Speaking at Sydney’s Electronic Music Conference last December, SFX Totem CEOs Richie McNeill and Dror Erez indicated that an expansion into Asia – mirroring Future Music Festival’s own into Malaysia – was on the cards, saying: “[Asia] is going to be the next battleground between these guys [Future Music Festival] and us.”
