More than 20 Australian musicians have been simultaneously honoured with a new award from ARIA as part of a freshly launched program that acknowledges the success of local and international artists who managed to hit #1 on the ARIA Albums or Singles Chart.

Starting today, the brand new ARIA #1 Chart Award will be instantly presented to music-makers that manage to top the charts, and as part of the launch the likes of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Flume, Karnviool, and Bliss N Eso have all been retrospectively awarded the new gong in recognition of hitting #1 in the last 18 months.

That list of new gong recipients includes #1 albums by Birds Of Tokyo, Boy & Bear, Chet Faker, RÜFÜS, and even INXS, as well as One Direction’s favourite Sydney pop punks 5 Seconds Of Summer and Sheppard for three weeks at the top of the ARIA Singles chart for ‘Geronimo’, the longest reign by an independently released single ever.
“We’re thrilled to congratulate this amazing array of artists on their chart topping success,” said ARIA CEO Dan Rosen in a press statement today; “I’m delighted that we can celebrate their feats with an Award literally as they happen. We look forward to handing out many more awards to artists in the future.”

ARIA has also put together a photo gallery of a selection of the awarded artists modelling their shiny new addition to the trophy cabinet.

It’s not the first time ARIA has handed out trophies to recognise #1 releases by Australian artists, having previously issued #1 Chart Award trophies at infrequent awards ceremonies (the last being in 2012), but the new ‘instantaneous model’ has been introduced due to the storming success of Aussies on the ARIA Charts since January 2013.

In that 18 month period, 17 local albums have hit #1, while Australian artists have spent a combined 34 weeks at #1 across both the ARIA Singles and Albums Charts, while 82 singles and 66 albums have been accredited with gold, platinum, or multi-platinum sales status.
