It’s official, 10 days out from kick-off, the Splendour In The Grass 2014 lineup has lost one of its headlining acts, Two Door Cinema Club.

Following on from this morning’s report that the Irish indie trio had cancelled a string of UK festival appearances due to frontman, Alex Trimble being hospitalised due to a “chronic stomach complaint”, Splendour In The Grass officials now confirm that Two Door Cinema Club won’t be making it to Byron Bay this month.

An official statement from the band and organisers reads:

“It is with a heavy heart that we are going to need to cancel our upcoming trip to Australia for Splendour in the Grass. Alex collapsed at Seattle airport on the way to London and has been hospitalised with a chronic stomach complaint. We are devastated to have to cancel this show that we were so looking forward to. We can only apologise and hope for your understanding at this time. Love TDCC x”

Splendour organisers add that they “have no further information about Alex’s health at this time but we send him and the band our best and wish him a speedy recovery!”

Two Door Cinema Club’s cancellation has also affected the official set times, with organisers re-shuffle currently billed band, City & Colour, to fill in the scheduled headline slot at the Amphitheatre stage on the Saturday night.

As for the gap left behind by Dallas Green’s band? Splendour’s pulled in an excellent last-minute replacement: UK indie favourites Foals.

“Our eleventh hour saviours had a weekend off their European Festival headline tour, so decided that flying to the country that gave them their first Number 1 album was the right thing to do,” write Splendour organisers. “They’re going to fly in for 48 hours & give us one of their internationally renowned ‘extreme level’ live performances. Give it up for the UK’s Best Live Band!! We are stoked to present Foals exclusively at Splendour 2014!”

Ensnaring Foals – who were in Australia last September for a critically acclaimed headline tour – is a last-minute Plan B that recalls last year’s Splendour 11th replacement, in which Splendour roped in Lorde for the Byron festival after headlining act Frank Ocean pulled out and cancelled his Australian tour due to damaging his voice. It was a major career turning point for the then-16-year-old New Zealander.

“Full credit to Splendour’s nifty plan-b – she proves an outstanding choice, warming the cockles of those still mourning Ocean’s decision to stick with his honey, lemon and tea,” wrote our Splendour reviewer of Lorde’s triumphant set. “Like Jake Bugg and Haim before her, she oozes craftsmanship and live delivery beyond her adolescent years and puts to shame the rest of us who really weren’t too productive during puberty.

The Two Door Cinema Club/Foals/City And Colour switcharoo occurs just days after The Wild Feathers pulled out of the Splendour lineup due to “scheduling conflicts.” They will be replaced by Mt Warning, the WA ambient indie rock group comfortably taking the Nashville band’s afternoon slot on the GW McLennan stage on Sunday 27 July.

Don’t forget that Splendour In The Grass 2014 has got plenty of extra-musical activities, such as the Splendour In The Craft, featuring Fancy Free (the ‘crafternoon’ side-project of The Grates’ Patience Hogdson) and other festival-billed artists showing how to make “Piñata Boom Boxes, Cool As F#%k Guitar Pick Charm Bracelets, Scissors Paper Rock-n-roll fanzines” and other arty delights. Plus there’s the Splendour Forum, a special program where musicians, politicians, and music thinkers will take part in a series of live panels, interviews, debates, live discussions. There’ll be a special edition of ABC’s Q&A, a songwriting workshop, and more. (Full detailshere)
