It’s not every day that an Australian band gets officially voted the worst in the world, so when it happens you want to make a big show of it. Bear this new “honour” with pride and revel in the majesty of entering a sacred brotherhood with legendary names such as Creed, Nickelback, Puddle of Mudd [sic], and Dave Matthews Band.

It explains why our very own 5 Seconds of Summer were so chuffed to learn that legendary British music magazine NME declared them the “worst band” during the recently held 2015 NME Awards. The ceremony was held on Wednesday at London’s O2 Academy Brixton, with 5SOS promptly celebrating their win on Twitter.

“Won the NME worst band award,” Michael Clifford, alt-haired guitarist for the Sydney pop rock outfit, posted to Twitter on Wednesday. “I’m so damn happy right now. thx to everyone who voted #dreamscomingtrue.” Bassist Calum Hood, meanwhile, retweeted a fan who wrote, “5SOS won worst band I’m so proud of them.”

The tweet was also re-shared on the official 5 Seconds of Summer Twitter account, where it quickly accrued 55,000 favourites, because, y’know, 5 Seconds of Summer are a huge pop act with over 6 million Twitter followers, whose fans wouldn’t read NME if it came in Snap form.

Earning themselves the Worst Band trophy means the divisive pop rock outfit beat out the likes of Bastille, The 1975, 5SOS’s generous benefactors One Direction (who previously won the award), as well as legitimate legends Blink-182 and U2. We might remind you that U2 did actually try to force people to listen to their music.

One must also keep in mind the fact that Kasabian took home the awards for Best British Band and Best Album for their 2014 effort, 48:13, which many people agreed was a hot mess, so NME are grading on a very obscure curve. Other winners from the night included Jamie T, Royal Blood, and Jake Bugg.
