If you haven’t heard, Australia’s kind of a big deal in the international music scene right now. If you need any more proof, just check out the latest round of Grammy nominations which got released this week.

Sitting amongst superstars like Kendrick Lamar and Taylor Swift were none other than homegrown heroes Courtney Barnett and Tame Impala, with the two receiving nods for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album, respectively.

Barnett was pretty chuffed about the nomination, taking to Facebook to reveal that she’d spent the past few hours on a flight from “Paris > Abu Dhabi > Melbourne” and turned on her phone to hear she’d been nominated for a Grammy.

However, no one was more excited than the Colonel. Fans of the official KFC Australia Facebook page who happened to be browsing through their Facebook news feeds yesterday would have been greeted with the following post:

Sometimes I sit and eat KFC and sometimes I just sit. Congrats courtney barnett on Grammy nomination 󾔯

“Sometimes I sit and eat KFC and sometimes I just sit,” is of course a take on the songwriter’s critically acclaimed, J Award-winning debut album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, which dropped earlier this year.

While it’s nice of the fast-food giant to show their support for homegrown music, we’re not exactly sure Barnett would be one to “sit and eat KFC”, even sometimes. Not sure if anyone told KFC’s social media person, but Barnett is a vegetarian.

“I’ve been vegetarian since I was 18, but I didn’t really ever eat meat. I eat fish but not other meat,” Barnett told the Sydney Morning Herald back in March. So we can safely say that a Zinger burger isn’t on her backstage rider.

It’s a small oversight, sure, but it’s not the first time in recent memory that KFC have been embroiled in the affairs of a prominent Australian vegetarian muso. Apparently, KFC’s new PR guy really has a thing for guitar-strumming vegos.

As we reported earlier this week, respected Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalists Xavier Rudd is currently in hot water with his fans after his song ‘Let Me Be’ was featured in KFC’s latest commercial.

Rudd is a known vegetarian who’s spoken out about animal rights issues in interviews, having been named Australia’s Sexiest Vegetarian by PETA in 2008 and receiving the 2009 ‘Rock the Boat Award’ for his support of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

The commercial debuted last month, immediately triggering a wave of criticism towards the singer. “Please tell me you didn’t sell rights to let me be to be played on the KFC ad… BIG downfall,” wrote one disappointed fan.

“Why are you supporting Kentucky fried cruelty? Thought you were an animal protector… you have lost my faith in you and probably many others. Care to explain why?” wrote another, while many echoed this fan’s simple sentiment: “WTF?”

As we mentioned earlier, it’s good to see a company showing their support for Australian music, even if they’re only doing it to promote their brand. They just might want to be a little more careful about choosing artists whose ethos is actually aligned with that brand.

UPDATE 2:30PM 09/12/15: Courtney Barnett has responded to KFC’s social media post via her Instagram account, sharing a screenshot of the post and writing, “I haven’t eaten chicken since I was 18, and when I did eat chicken, i don’t think I ever once ate a KFC chicken burger ever.”
