If you’re a passionate triple j devotee, it’s likely you awoke this morning with a smile on your face and turned the dial to tune into the comforting sounds of Breakfast hosts Matt Okine and Alex Dyson’s offbeat banter.
Only things didn’t exactly go according to plan this morning. Instead, you woke up to the equally comforting sounds of Good Nights host Linda Marigliano, who you may have noticed was playing tracks exclusively by female artists.
No, Matt and Alex aren’t chucking a sickie, it’s all part of triple j’s Girls To The Front programming, a day when the national youth broadcaster puts the focus on female artists to celebrate International Women’s Day.
The day of special programming and content kicked off with Linda’s Breakfast spot and continues as we speak with Zan Rowe on Mornings and Gemma Pike at Lunch, before Veronica (sans Lewis) takes over Drive with Gen Fricker.
Meanwhile, KLP will be taking over Linda’s Good Nights spot, followed by a very special episode of The Racket hosted by none other than Australia’s First Lady of Scream, Karina Utomo of Melbourne’s High Tension.
As triple triple j notes, you’ll also get to hear from some of Australia’s top female artists throughout the day reflecting on the women they admire in the music world, like Courtney Barnett, who shared her love of Canadian treasure Peaches.
“I’d never heard anything like it before and she totally inspired me to be myself, to re-evaluate gender stereotypes, to make my own art without apologies,” Barnett told triple j. “Plus, I’ve seen her a bunch of times and she absolutely rules the stage when she performs live.”
The festivities stretch across the entire triple j universe, with Unearthed playing the best up-and-coming female-driven music from around Australia and over on Double J, music journo Jessica Hopper will present “two hours of female music-makers” from 3pm.
