Tame Impala chief Kevin Parker only recently touched down in Australia for a break from an extensive tour promoting his latest album, Currents, which will ultimately see him trekking across Australia, Japan, Europe, and the US

And whilst we would probably be using that downtime to eat Doritos on our couch, Parker is already formulating new music for what could be Tame Impala’s next album. Then again, as he told the AAP, it might be something different entirely.

“I think after a long tour and after an album, your brain feels like it wants to relax but at the same time making music for me is something that comes kind of naturally. Just like a brain process,” he told the AAP during the recent APRA Awards.

“I’m trying not to work on stuff but there are always things to do. I always manage to keep myself busy. I’ve got my own recording studio in Perth just down the road from where I live so there are all sorts of things going on.”

But Parker admits he’s not sure just what it is he’s been working on. “I don’t really know what it is until it’s finished. Like I don’t know if it’s for Tame Impala or if it’s something I’m going to write for someone else, because I’ve been wanting to do that a lot more,” he said.

Parker has been keeping himself busy with a string of extracurricular activities recently, including producing for Perth band Koi Child and remixing tracks for his mates, like the recently unveiled remix of GUM’s ‘Anesthetized Lesson’.

As for Tame Impala, he promises the Currents follow-up will be even better than its predecessor. “Every album I do I think is my best and it is because I get better at songwriting, I get better at producing,” he said. “Making albums and making songs is just something that’s my passion.”

Speaking to the AAP, Parker revealed that Rihanna was the artist he most wanted to write for, but she beat him to the punch after she included a cover of Tame Impala’s ‘New Person, Same Old Mistakes’ on her latest album, ANTI.

“She (Rihanna) used one of my songs for her album so that was kind of a box that got ticked without me even ticking it,” he said. Parker ended up leaving the APRA Awards ceremony with the award for Song of the Year for ‘Let It Happen’.

Parker’s not the only one who’s been getting creative recently. Vimeo user Ben Aston has been giving Tame Impala fans nightmares after unveiling an unnerving compilation of supposed stock footage set to Tame’s song ‘Nangs’. Check it out below.
