Rage Against The Machine fans around the world basically erupted with joy yesterday after rumours surfaced that the band may be planning a reunion, five years after they last appeared on a stage together.

It began with a mysterious website, prophetsofrage.com, which contains a countdown timer set to conclude at the end of this month and warning fans, “Clear the way for the Prophets of Rage. The party’s over summer 2016.”

The page featured very Rage-esque artwork and some astute Los Angeles citizens noticed posters featuring the graphic popping up around the band’s hometown, convincing everyone that the rockers were finally returning.

However, more details have since emerged about Prophets of Rage thanks to a source close to the band, who revealed to Rolling Stone that Prophets of Rage is not the Rage reunion we’re all hoping for.

“This is not a Rage-specific reunion,” the source told the magazine. “There’s a lot more to it. There are a lot of moving parts, a lot of exciting news to be revealed.” Apparently, fans will have to wait for the revelations.

According to the source, the project will involve “some of the members of Rage”, triggering speculation that Prophets of Rage may be a supergroup featuring members of Rage Against the Machine and other bands.

The source did confirm, however, that live performances are on the agenda. “Whether that’s one show, or five shows, I don’t know,” the unnamed source said. “There are more announcements to come.”

Some have noted that ‘Prophets of Rage’ is the name of a song by iconic hip-hop group Public Enemy, leading to speculation that both groups may be cooking up a collaboration or possibly even a joint performance or tour.
