Police have issued a warning to punters heading to Splendour In The Grass this weekend, saying anybody caught with drugs will have their tickets confiscated along with the illicit substances.

As News Corp reports, police are planning an extensive operation over the three days of the festival, insisting punters caught with drugs will not simply have the drugs confiscated and be allowed to move on.

“There will be a highly visible police presence throughout the whole festival, both within the festival precinct and outside,” said Det Insp Brendon Cullen, the Tweed-Byron local area command crime manager.

“Police are warning festivalgoers that those who turn up with illicit drugs will be palmed from the venue. We’re not there as killjoys but we also have a role to play in law enforcement – especially anti-social or violent behaviour will not be tolerated.”

“If people come in thinking they’re going to be supplying drugs or having a free run with making it a drug festival, they should be concerned that they are likely to be detected and removed from the festival.”

“A lot of young people associate music festivals with drug taking and the concern we have is that they don’t know what it is they’re taking,” he said.

“While they may think it’s just a harmless pill, the fact remains … people taking pills have been known to have adverse reactions and die.”

Splendour In The Grass 2016 is set to kick off this Friday before concluding on Sunday. A turnout of 36,000 punters is expected to arrive at the North Byron Parklands to see a lineup featuring The Avalanches, The Strokes, and The Cure.

Event organisers confirmed to News Corp that they are committed to working with police to crack down on the use and supply of drugs at the festival and that they have a strict ‘no drugs’ policy in their tickets terms and conditions.

Last year saw police arrest 92 punters on various drug offences (a small number compared to the similarly sold-out turnout Splendour saw last year), seizing 468g worth of illicit substances.
