Peering at the album cover, one might wonder what to expect from Drunk Mums’ self-titled debut.
Defined by the band as “haggard aged titties”, in response of iTunes refusal to post the artwork along with their music, the band responded, “stuff those suits… this image is spot on and best represents Drunk Mums.” Indeed.
If anything it is this response that encapsulates the spirit of the band. Thrashing out 11 tracks of vigorous garage punk in just under 24 minutes, the call from the band to fuck authority and get crazy is immediate and unsubtle.
Opening with the hilariously titled ‘Big Titty Trippin’, Drunk Mums set the mood for an exhilarating burst of passion over talent. The stripped back presentation here is tight, and polished with just enough restraint as not to lose the raw appeal of their sound.
The alternating between whiny drawl and frantic shrieking of the vocals match the aesthetic of the record, and are appropriately crude. ‘Hematemesis’ stands out as a highlight amongst the pack, as the upstarts channel genre heavyweights The Hives, as well newcomers Wavves on the track ‘Outstayed Your Welcome’.
For those acquainted with the garage revival of the noughties, or the thriving scene around Melbourne at the moment, you will have an idea of what to expect.
While the jangly distorted guitars and DIY spirit doesn’t innovate, albums such as these are more a primer for Drunk Mums’ explosive live show than anything.
While it is a shame that this vitality cannot be fully captured in the recording process, the album is held together with raw melody and furious rhythms. A visceral whirlwind of youthful energy, Drunk Mums’ debut is a rough party album through and through.
