It’s Saturday morning and the first day of summer, so many reasons to smile. Finding the new Jim James track ‘Know Til Now’ is also another reason to grin from ear to ear, as it’s the first taste from his first solo record and it’s pretty damn sweet! Other new tracks come from Darren Cross Band (Gerling), with a new country vibe, Richard In Your Mind, youngster Patrick James and the delightful Mietta. Happy Summer!

Jim James – Know Til Now

The first taste of ‘Regions of Light and Sound of God’ the debut solo album for Jim James of My Morning Jacket which is due for an Australian release February 1, 2013. If you’re a Jim James fan you won’t be disappointed by ‘Know Til Now’, with smooth vocals, chilled out soundscapes and drum beats, this track takes you to a place where new meets old especially at the end of the track with jazzed out Saxophone. Jim James has possibly created a new genre…

Darren Cross Band – ‘Every Creep In Town’

Darren Cross trades the quirky electro pop of his main project Gerling (who are currently on an indefinite hiatus) for lo-fi country stylings on his new solo venture. ‘Every Creep In Town’ is the first taste of a forthcoming solo record from Cross, and is a minimal, raw track featuring just vocals and a twangy acoustic guitar. The song is a short affair, clocking in at under two minutes, but is a charming, emotive number that will leave you wanting more. Described as a “Buddy Holly meets Daniel Johnston inspired tale”, the lyrics revolve around the “hopelessness and comedy of creepy people falling in love with the person who you, yourself, are in love with”.

Richard In Your Mind – Mozzarella

Is it possible that Richard In Your Mind is our answer to a modern day Beck? ‘Mozzarella’ the first single from their brand new EP; it’s groovy, kooky and slightly creepy but in a good way! One assumes they’re singing about cheese, but maybe they’re not… perhaps it’s just a metaphor for their mind melty music. Who cares anyway, the track is catchy and fun and makes you want to experience Richard In Your Mind as a live show.

Patrick James – All About To Change

This is the second taste of this NSW folk singers forthcoming EP, set to be released in March 2013. The song follows its predecessor, ‘Brighter Lights’ with the same soft acoustic style. Although ‘All About to Change’ is built around a banjo twang, with delicate drumming and sweet melody creating a mellow charm. Sounding like a more hushed Mumford and Sons without to much pop, Patrick James was recently announced as Triple J’s Unearthed Winner for Festival of the Sun.

Mietta – Gone

Smooth, soulful vocals underpinned by soft tribal percussion. It’s time to get acquainted with the debut single from Melbourne songstress Mimi Zaetta-Thomas, better known in the musical world as simply Mietta. This four-minute offering features hints of jazz, soul, flamenco and tribal beats that are topped off by Mimi’s striking vocals. ‘Gone’ is the first single from Mietta’s debut album, the result of two years in the studio together with a 17-piece orchestra. Light, simple and positively charming, ‘Gone’ is our gift to your ears. You can thank us later.
