Hi, my name’s Dom, I play in Mitzi with Cale, Charlie & Jad. We all met at a salsa dance night in 2010 and our instructor was named Mitzi.
How does it feel to get recognition from international music websites and blogs?
It feels great; especially to get props from site’s like Pitchfork & Rolling Stone. It’s awesome to see people overseas are vibing on what we’re doing.
Who would you say has been your biggest influence musically and why?
I would have to say Nile Rodgers, if I could achieve a 100th of what he’s done in his lifetime I would be very happy. Everyone should check out his book ‘Le Freak’, it’s amazing.
You’re about to release your debut album Truly Alive, what was the most challenging part of putting the record together?
Recording and producing it ourselves was pretty challenging and a huge learning curve. We recorded WWLYN & Truly Alive with Jono Ma, but the rest we did ourselves in our studio up in Brisbane.
Recording an album can be tough, but what was the most enjoyable part of the process?
Finally finishing a song. Because we had our own studio we could keep working on a song without the time constraints of a normal studio and it’s easy to get stuck, going around in circles, analysing little parts of the track, playing with synth sounds etc. I guess that is something we learnt while recording this album was not to sit on a track for to long. My favourite track on the record is ‘Truly Alive’ which we pretty much wrote and recorded in a day down in Sydney with Jono.
You recently got to support Foals in Sydney, how did those shows go?
Both shows were madness, people came in early to see us play which was great to see and Foals killed it, their new stuff is BIG.
What was your favourite track of 2012?
Kindness – ‘House’
If you could curate your own festival, where would it be, who would be on the bill?
Somewhere in the deep outback w/ Prince, Grace Jones, and Chic
Because it’s more fun to do things together, which living Australian artist would you most like to collaborate with? Tell us why?
We would love to do something with Dan Whitford from Cut Copy, we have all been huge fan’s of Cut Copy since their first album.
What is your band’s music the best soundtrack for?
Summer
What’s next for Mitzi?
