We don’t really need invocations of Spanish beaches here in Australia.
Every glamorous dream of sultry Mediterranean chicas is more likely to result in sunburnt English revelers and maniacal German holidaymakers, rather than our own picture perfect coastline.
Yet such unimpressive imagery is counter-factual to Spanish band Los Coronas’ liberating surf rock style.
Equal parts Dick Dale. Hank Marvin, and the foot stomping raw rock of ZZ top, this is unashamed good time music.
Festival favourites and all round good guy desperados. Los Coronas rock hard without reverting to easy clichés.
“Libertwango” evokes the aforementioned Hank Marvin in the midst of a San Miguel fuelled lost weekend, and the fantastically infectious “Big Wave Riders”, smacks straight in the face harder than a Bondi wipe out.
“Aguascalientes” is quiet and broody waiting in the shadows to mug the nearest passer by, in contrast to “Calle Tesoro” reminiscent of a stolen kiss from a beautiful but dangerous Senorita.
Allegedly a great band live, Los Coronas infectious energy only partly translates to the recording studio, revealing a few moments where everything is chucked into the mix, and less certainly could be more.
However, even where they’re roughest around the edges, Los Coronas are here to party hard Spanish style, and it’s what they do best.
According to the department of hearsay statistics, Spain is one of the happiest countries in the world. With music like this, can anyone be surprised?
