Feargal Sharkey of legendary Northern Ireland punk band The Undertones, who penned Radio DJ John Peel’s favourite song ‘Teenage Kicks,’ is set to be offered a seat in the British Parliament’s House of Lords. According to a report in London’s The Mirror, new Tory Leader David Cameron is considering offering the one time teenage punk a life peerage for services to the music industry. Sharkey turned down an offer to join a reformed Undertones in 1999, and has become a vocal advocate of measures to support the music industry and musicians. He is currently the head of record industry pressure group UK Music, and speaks out about music piracy and restrictions on live performances. A ‘Government source’ says “David Cameron is deeply impressed with Feargal and his knowledge, leadership and commitment when it comes to representing the music business.

“He would be a welcome addition to the House of Lords or in a role advising the Government, although nothing has been finalised yet.” The cynics down at Tone Deaf HQ reckon this is an easy way to grab the youth vote but can’t be any worse than John Lydon of the Sex Pistols advertising Country Life margarine.
