The head of the German police union, Rainer Wendt, has come out claiming he warned the town mayor and Love Parade organisers that the site was unsafe before the events of last Saturday, in which 19 people were crushed to death in a stampede and hundreds more left injured.

Wendt told Bild Newspaper “I warned them a year ago that Duisburg is not a suitable location for the Love Parade. It’s too small and too cramped,” He also went on to say that the mayor was under a lot of pressure to approve the festival, for fear of being a ‘party pooper’.

The site had only one entrance, and it’s estimated by police that around 1.4 million people could have attended, although the site was only set up to host 250, 000.

German investigators are looking into the possibility of charging the organisers with negligent homicide.
