One of Adelaide’s most exciting new talents Thom Lion has spent the past year between recording an EP with John Castle (Cub Sport, Vance Joy, Josh Pyke) at The Shed Studios in Melbourne and today we’re seeing a taste of this hard work in his new single ‘Mess at Best’.
A cacophony of catchy hooks and shonky but groove laden synths that draw influences from acts such as Cold War Kids and Arcade Fire ‘Mess at Best’ is an exciting taste of what to expect from Lion’s EP of the same name.
Explaining the creation of the song Thom says “I wrote the hook for this on my home piano a few years ago, didn’t touch it until a month out from recording and the words and song came out really quickly. Took it to the guys and no one was really sure about it, we almost didn’t record it until the producer John told us to give it a crack! I then came back from Melbourne and scrapped the vocals, re-did them at home to get the vibe right. It’s about sometimes being a mess even at the best of times – but pleading with your loved one that it’s part the package, good and bad.”
