Despite plenty of loving messages sent from Liam Gallagher to his older brother for Noel’s recent 50th birthday, the former Oasis frontman has flipped back to his usual brash self overnight, tearing into his sibling for not attending the huge One Love Manchester fundraising concert that took place in the Gallaghers’ hometown yesterday evening.
While Liam wasn’t billed as playing at the event, and was instead scheduled to play a gig in Germany hours earlier, telling BBC Radio 1 “I mean I’m up for it but I think we’ve got a gig somewhere,”. He ended up flying back by private jet immediately afterwards, however, to ensure that he could make it home to play a short set of Oasis classics and new material for an emotional crowd.
Rumours had swirled that the two former Oasis members would aside the long-standing differences that eventually broke the band apart and reunite at the concert, which featured names like Robbie Williams, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, and of course Ariana Grande, whose concert was the target of the bombing that claimed 22 lives.
As Liam put it, however, Noel chose to remain “out of the f**cking country” for the gig, prompting his brother to lay into him on Twitter, NME reports.
Gallagher’s post-concert tweets began gently enough, but it didn’t take long for the finger to be pointed at the absent Mancunian, whose anthem ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ had been sung by locals holding vigil earlier in the week and was performed on the night by Coldplay’s Chris Martin.
“What an amazing night last night pure love vibrations nobody comes close to Manchester love forever,” he began, “Oh and if anybody’s seen rkid tell hm he can come out now as you were.”
“Manchester I’d like to apologise for my brothers absence last very disappointed,” he added, and things turned nastier from there.
“Noels out of the fucking country weren’t we all love get on a fucking plane and play your tunes for the kids you sad fuck”, Liam wrote, and when one fan joked that a reunion was probably further away than ever, Gallagher spat back, “Fuck the reunion mate it ain’t about oasis it’s about people helping other people and he’s once again shown his true fucking colours”.
While the concert raised £2 million towards the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund (now sitting at over £10 million), many – like Liam – would have also been hoping for one of the most famous Mancunians in music to be in attendance.
