The release of Bikini Kill’s 15 minute-long debut in ’92 became one of the releases to kick-start the punk feminist riot grrrl movement, and for five short years the band burnt strongly and brightly as a beacon against violence and abuse towards women, and stood for their empowerment in the music industry and the arts.
After 20 years of relative silence, punctuated only by a handful of re-releases and unreleased tracks, they’ve now reunited onstage at The Kitchen in New York, supporting fellow post-punk heroes The Raincoats.
As Pitchfork reports, the gig came about as part of a three-night event celebrating the release of their editor Jean Pelly’s new book 33 1/3 about the Raincoats’ self-titled album, and the reunion was a surprise even to Pelly.
Tobi Vail, Kathi Wilcox and Kathleen Hanna played a single track, ‘For Tammy Rae’, the final track from their ’93 Pussy Whipped EP, which you can check out below.
The night also brought about a reunion for The Raincoats, with the band’s original drummer Palmolive joining them for the first time since 1979, having quit the band all those years back.
