MOZA are an eclectic electronic duo on the rise – carving their path amongst Australia’s fertile scene for all things groove-laden and synthy, the band have built up a rep for being one of the tightest live acts in the country.
They’re currently on tour, tearing up dance floors across the country in celebration of their newest single ‘Right Words’ – here’s a little snippet of their incredible live chops with a live performance of the epic track.

Watch MOZA perform ‘Right Words’ live in studio:

TONE DEAF: What initially inspired you to pursue electronic music?

MOZA: We used to be in a 6 piece folk rock band which we used to pour our blood sweat and tears into until one day we decided to try our hand at making some different sounds after being inspired by the uprising Australian electronic music scene.
We loved the idea of coming into the industry as musicians and bring that live experience to the table. We released our debut single “On the Line” and the rest is history.

TONE DEAF: What’s the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome incorporating live instrumentation into your live show?

MOZA: Where do we start? hahaha. The live show is such a pit of the best kind of anxiety at times. We really take the time and effort to go through each and every part with a fine tooth comb to make sure we are bringing our audiences the best show possible. From our light show that we tour with occasionally to just making sure the show works the whole way through we spend hours upon hours problem solving and improvising.
Some of the biggest challenges are integrating new songs that we write into the set which involves a shit ton of programming and resampling. Adding drums into the show was a new challenge all together but was something we’ve always wanted to do. We pretty much had to strip back all the songs we were playing and build new versions of them to showcase the drums. It was so incredibly worth it though. We played our first show with our drummer Andy last month and we knew we couldn’t go back.

TONE DEAF: Track that goes off the most live?

MOZA: Thats a super hard one as we’ve made our set super upbeat and dancey. Would have to say Gold or Empty Streets are the big ones that really get the floor moving. Andy drops these huge drum fills in the chorus of Empty Streets and it’s those moments where we’re so locked in that we got into music for. It’s indescribable.

TONE DEAF: Where did you look to for inspiration whilst writing ‘Right Words’

MOZA: Funny story about Right Words.. I remember we had a bit of writer’s block and were trolling through Spotify looking for inspiration. We found a throwback 80’s playlist and started vibing of the super heavy synth-based songs. Pretty sure it was “the best” by Tina Turner that inspired the song initially. The chorus has the heavy stabs and is super empowering. After that, the song came together really quickly. We were just in the mindset to write a track with that kind of meaning
behind it.

TONE DEAF: What’s your biggest musical inspiration outside of electronic music?

Toby: Watching people build live shows. I love watching all the youtube videos on how people have put together shows which then in turn inspires me to make ours better / make some music.
Cam: Honest, brilliant songwriting and live performances with real heart. I’d take tone and honesty over a crazy technical voice any day. Growing up listening to Dad’s Beatles collection, watching John Mayer’s live DVD seeing independent artists like Ron Pope slaying it. That’s the inspo.

TONE DEAF: What’s the biggest learning curve you faced since the beginning of your career?

MOZA: It will never go the way you think. Plan as much as you can, slog as hard as you can, but don’t be disappointed when it doesn’t come off. Cause it will, just not the way you planned. We’ve had to learn to celebrate the little wins and not sweat the small stuff. Go hard. Go all in.
