Following in the footsteps of Pivot (PVT) earlier this year, prominent up-and-coming Sydney musician/producer Daminals (aka Jonti Danilewitz) has announced a he will be changing his stage name to Djanimals.
The name change comes in fear of a prospective lawsuits in the U.S. of A., from diary/yoghurt behemoth Dannon, who distributes the Daminals children’s yoghurt brand. After being hand-picked by international producer of the moment Mark Ronson to work with the likes of Santigold, The Kaiser Chiefs and Albert Hammond jnr. on the track which eventually became Fox, Danilewitz stocks have risen internationally, leading to him being the first Australian signed to US label Stones Throw (Madlib, Dam-Funk and J Dilla).
Better to be safe than sorry Danliewitz explains. “When I started, my brother recommended I use ‘Danimals’ as a silly play on our surname. It was cool and did the job. As this stuff got more serious, we became aware of the children’s yogurt and the massive corporation known as Dannon that could eat our heads off they so desired. So obviously it makes sense to change it while everything is still in its infancy. Honestly who would mess with that gorilla?”
You can stream a mix tape put together by Djanimals here, and you can catch Djanimals as he tours his Nightshift In Blue 7″ down the East Coast.
