Damon Albarn has supposedly confirmed long held rumours about the effect heroin had on the eventual breakup of Blur. Speaking to London’s media at the premiere of a new documentary about Blur and their reformation gigs at Hyde Park and Glastonbury last year, Albarn recounted the reasons for writing the song Beetlebum – long thought to be about his former partner Justine Frischmann of Elastica’s heroin use – in 1997.
It seems some eager tabloid journos got a bit carried away and ran stories the next day saying Damon had admitted that heroin use was the reason for the band splitting in 2003. Tone Deaf hears that a very stern legal letter was sent by Damon’s lawyers to the editors of a number of newspapers and strangely almost all mentions of the story have been removed from the web.
