Following yesterday’s news, that “bankruptcy and [her] health struggles” would force American songstress Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, to cancel a string of dates across Europe, the singer-songwriter now says the tour won’t be cancelled after all.

Yesterday, Tone Deaf confirmed these worries would not affect Marshall’s appearances in Australia, with Aunty Meredith and Golden Plains organisers saying in a statement: “Cat Power’s March Australian tour and Golden Plains performance will go ahead as planned, there’s absolutely no reason for concern.”

And now, as Spin points out, Marshall has taken to Twitter to confirm her European dates will be going ahead. But not without some changes, such as the loss of her current stage design which includes the enormous gorilla backdrop.

Marshall has recently been struggling with a skin condition called Angioedema, which can cause severe swelling around the throat and face. Marshall explained her situation to fans in a series of all-caps social media posts and photographs.

MY ANGIOEDEMA IS FROM LOW IMMUNE & IS CAUSED BY STRESS. All I wanna do is sing my damn songs & give my best to the fans that love me. NOT HAVING FUNDS TO HAVE MY STUPID LIGHT SHOW FOR FANS HAS PUT ME IN A CORNER. BUT I WAS BORN IN A CORNER….. REFUSE TO LOSE.

Cat Power released her ninth studio album Sun earlier in the year, her first set of new material in six years. The album was well-received by critics, including Tone Deaf’s reviewer who wrote: “… Sun is without a doubt the most assured and invigorated Cat Power has sounded yet.”

The update is encouraging news for local fans, who will have feared any disruptions to European shows for health or financial reasons would also affect Marshall’s plans to tour Australia next year, which includes a headline spot at Golden Plains

The worries began when Marshall released an Instagram post included the message:

MAY HAVE TO CANCEL MY EUROPEAN TOUR DUE TO BANKRUPTCY & MY HEALTH STRUGGLE WITH ANGIOEDEMA. I HAVE NOT THROWN IN ANY TOWEL, I AM TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT BEST I CAN DO. HEART BROKEN. WORKED SO HARD. GOT SICK DAY AFTER “SUN” CAME OUT & BEEN STRUGGLING TO KEEP ALL POINTS OF ME IN EQUILIBRIUM : MIND, SPIRIT, BODY HEALTHY CENTERED & GROUNDED. I AM DOING THE BEST I CAN. I FUCKING LOVE THIS PLANET. I REFUSE TO GIVE UP. THOUGH I MAY NEED TO RESTRATAGIZE FOR MY SECURITY & HEALTH.

She will continue her North American dates, which have been unaffected so far, before moving onto Europe later this month with her new stripped-back stage setup.

Hopefully Marshall can find the health and happiness she continues to seek, and not just purely for the benefit of Golden Plains ticket holders.
