According to Setlist.fm, the Foo Fighters have played well over 1,300 live shows since they first formed over 20 years ago. Whether that’s as the support act or the headlining band, that’s a lot of shows and a lot of bands to have played with. Now, after decades of serving as one of the world’s biggest groups, Dave Grohl has opened up about the best support act that the Foo Fighters have ever had.

Over the years, a Foo Fighters gig has seen some pretty huge tour supports. Whether it be big names like Weezer, who joined the group on their Aussie tour this year, or local groups such as The Delta Riggs, who joined the group back in 2015, you’re always guaranteed to see a good show. However, Dave Grohl reckons that one group outshines them all.

Speaking to Radio X following the conclusion of the band’s UK tour, Dave Grohl explained that the best group to ever open up their concert proceedings is England’s The Struts, who have opened for the Foo Fighters in 2017 and 2018.

“I guess they don’t get a lot of love in England, but in America, they’re the best opening band we’ve ever had,” explained Dave Grohl.

“That kid Luke, the singer, it’s unbelievable. He’ll walk out in front of an audience in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where nobody has ever heard of them and by the end of the show he’ll have the entire audience in the palm of his hand,” he continued. “I love seeing that. To see an audience turn like that is not easy.”

Dave also took the time to explain the reasoning that goes into picking a band to support the group on their huge tours. “One of the great things about being in the position we’re in – playing these big shows is that we get to decide who’s playing with us, and we try to expose new audiences to great new music that they maybe might not otherwise heard,” he explained.

“Bands like Wolf Alice and The Cribs [the Foo Fighters’ UK tour supports], they’re huge and they don’t need our help,” he continued. “But sometimes we’ll take out a lesser known band and have them come out on the road with us.”

You might recall how Dave Grohl announced last month that the failed collaboration between himself and David Bowie is finally set to be released at some point in the future, with a mystery band being tapped to actually perform the final product.

No word yet as to whether or not it’ll be The Struts that score this huge honour, but considering Dave’s glowing recommendation of the group, we wouldn’t be surprised.
