Dave Grohl recently launched a new Instagram account called Dave’s True Stories, and the most recent yarn he’s come through with is a killer. After already posting stories about pissing off his mum by lighting fireworks in the back yard and being asked to play Ozzfest for the first time, Grohl has now spoken about the time he jammed with Prince.

He prefaces the story by revealing that playing music with the purple one had been a dream his entire adult life, so when it finally happened, it was a “surreal” moment.

“There I was, standing in a cold, curtained off dressing area, trying to desperately keep my cool… This was not just another conversation in just another backstage room on just another Friday night… It was Prince. And he was asking me to jam.”

The fateful day came nine years ago, when Prince invited Grohl to perform with him and his band during the soundcheck at LA’s The Forum. But the days leading up to it were fraught with nerves.

“I was told that Prince had my cell number and would call me,” Grohl muses. “There was no way he was going to miss that call, even taking special measures to ensure his phone was charged. “I’m that guy whose phone battery is always hovering between 4 and 11 percent.

“But, let me tell you… for those 7 days, I didn’t let that motherfucker dip below 100% for one hot second. Ringer on 10. Vibrate on “stun”.

As the time grew near, Grohl was already in dreamland after finding out Prince was going to be playing ‘Best Of You’ at the Super Bowl Halftime show as part of a medley of covers.

“I was stunned. In shock. Flooded with emotion… I realised that this was without a doubt my proudest musical achievement.”

The jam session itself started out pretty low key. Prince asked if Grohl wanted “to play some drums,” to begin with. Then, without “a soul in sight to witness it,” the pair of them started going at it.

“It fucking slammed. Fat, funky, big bottomed swing as he let loose solos that would make your teeth curl,” Grohl writes. “My rock’n’roll fantasy was coming true, and I couldn’t fucking wait to share it with an arena packed full of die hard Prince fans like myself!”

“I had fulfilled a life dream, with no evidence of it to share with anyone, other than a memory that will stay with me forever.”
