Seemingly not content with just overcoming a gnarly cancer diagnosis, Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine has added to his general badarse-ery by earning his purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

At the ripe age of 59-years-old, Mustaine achieved the prestigious belt last week (January 14th, 2021) at Gracie Barra training location in Spring Hill, Tennessee.

His instructor, Reginaldo Almeida, who is a third-degree jiu-jitsu black belt posted of the rockers accomplishment on Facebook.

“After 2 years as a blue belt and hard training and lots of ups and downs today I had the honor to promote Mr @davemustaine to his well deserved purple belt ! Congratulations kid !!!” He wrote.

It’s some well-deserved positive news for The Megadeath frontman who announced his diagnosis with cancer in June 2019 in an Instagram post.

“I’ve been diagnosed with throat cancer. It’s clearly something to be respected and faced head on – but I’ve faced obstacles before. I’m working closely with my doctors, and we’ve mapped out a treatment plan which they feel has a 90% success rate. Treatment has already begun

“I’m so thankful for my whole team – family, doctors, band members, trainers, and more,” he wrote.

Less than a year later, on January 31st, 2020, Dave Mustaine shared that he is “100 percent” cancer-free to a packed stadium during a live concert for Megadeth.

“It was 51 radiation treatments and nine chemo treatments and when it was all said and done, every day I would think, ‘I can’t face not playing again,’ so I would pray,” he told fans.

“I know a lot of you guys know that I pray. I say that in ‘Peace Sells’. I pray every day. I say that in the song. I’ve said it since the second record.

“But I thought about you guys every day, too. And I thought about my family. And I got this power from you guys. And I just kept thinking about it. And on October 16, I went to go see the doctor, and he said, ‘You’re 100% free of cancer.'”
