Golden retrievers, drinking wine with Lady Gaga and a slew of brooding pop hits. We sat down with Chase Zera to get to know her better, as she sets her sights on absolute pop domination with her raw and emotional collection of pop tracks.

The ever-talented Chase Zera has been spreading her talents across the performing arts scenes since the age of six.

After being accepted into the Australian Institute of Music, where she studied Composition and Audio Engineering as well as attending Ableton Live School, she learned the basics of music production. This helped spark her passion for pop and electronic music and allowed her to experiment and find her signature brooding, pop-house sound.

She has also collaborated in writing and production with various artists such as Xavier Dunn, Stu Turner from Set Mo, Wongo, Amastro, Commandeur, Bajillionaire & GANZ.

Zera’s sound is as upbeat as it is electrifying, with airy vocals and a distinct vibrato coming into beautiful collaboration over spacey house beats. ‘Clovers’ is a shimmering example of Zera’s unequalled knack for fusing electronic tendencies with sultry pop vocals. The lyrics are sharp, her tone is heavenly, and the beat is always on point. Chase Zera is definitely one to watch.

We sat down with the pop star on the rise to discuss her incredible set of tracks, from ‘Clovers’ to the heartbreaking track ‘Mess’.

How would you describe your music to your grandma?

“I think you’ll really like it Nanna, but I’ll still never be as cool as Frank Sinatra or Etta James”

Tell us about a few of your tracks; their titles and what they’re about

‘Clovers’ – Someone treated me quite badly and we abruptly finished dating. A little while later they were constantly messaging me and calling me saying they’d made a mistake and were ready to be with me now. I was angry that they thought they could just make that choice and all of a sudden come back into my life and be with me. So ‘Clovers’ was my way of saying, “Actually no, I haven’t just been sitting around waiting for you to come back and want me, I’m fine without you and now you need to move on.” It was an empowering moment and it was a turn I took in learning to love myself without someone else’s validation.

‘Mess’ – Someone saw the best in me, and I so badly wanted to make it work between us. ‘Mess’ talks about the frustration and confusion I felt within myself for not having strong romantic feelings for someone who treated me well and deserved my time. I suppose ‘Mess’ immortalises the saying ‘you can’t choose who you fall in love with’. My headspace was in a mess when I was writing the song, so I figured it would be a powerful title.

‘Said I Would’ – This song is my way of saying to people, “It doesn’t matter if you previously said you’d do something.. if you feel uncomfortable or if you have changed your mind and you think it’s better for you and your own wellbeing not to do it, you should never be afraid to turn around and change your mind.” Sometimes we make bad decisions sporadically or let people make bad decisions for us, or we make choices and then outgrow those choices. It doesn’t mean you can’t change your fate, look after yourself, say no and move forward.
