According to Jalapeno Records if you’re a fan of funk then a new offering from Dimitri Nassios should get you salivating.
Recording under the name Quasamodo, Nassios has teamed up with Tahliah to release a damn funky EP.
Opening with Latino-influenced ‘Can’t Hold Me Down’, Quasamodo builds up anticipation layering sharp horn melodies over some very fat bass lines with what appears to be a Latin street party providing the rhythm section.
Next track, ‘Change is Strange’, lets singer Tahliah flex her vocal muscles with her lyrics delving into issues synonymous with funk, individuality, and sticking it to the omnipresent man.
The high energy level never drops throughout the EP but ‘Change Is Strange’ is easily the smoothest and least chaotic track.
It recalls a golden age of funk with its synthesized drum beat, organ heavy undertones, and low-down dirty wah-wah guitar.
The last two tracks, ‘Son Of Shaft’ and ‘Funkenstein’, provide layered funk jams with Nassios doing what he seems to love best- building tracks from the bottom up and placing melody upon melody until a pulsating web of funk evolves.
A great release from one of funk’s moste exciting players.
