One of the most recent releases from Poison City Records is Postblue’s I Hope They’re Praying For Me, an album that shows no boundaries. It is a collection that can only be described as an emotional rollercoaster that leaves you broken, full of angst, and quite happy – just as you are after leaving a really good mosh pit.
It opens with ‘Ugly’, very much in the style of pop punkers Basement and homegrown superstars Violent Soho. Super catchy and upbeat, the track serves as a perfect entree to this gnarly 10-course meal. ‘Cross’ rips into you like Kurt Cobain – screaming and raspy vocals paired with heavy distortion make for a killer combo.
‘Honey’ is as sweet as its name, quite melancholic and reminiscent of Smashing Pumpkins, yet opens with an easy-going riff that isn’t overpowering. ‘Wallow’ has to be the catchiest track on the LP, with one particular recurring melody that glues itself to your brain in an instant.
The final songs are also solid offerings. ‘Way To Heaven’ gives off strong vibes of Michigan act Citizen, and ‘Riley Needs Jesus’ makes for a nice conclusion – fading out nicely, but with enough power and emotion to leave you wanting more from the punk prophets.
A 90s revival wrapped in an enigma, I Hope They’re Praying For Me is one hell of a debut record and an exciting start for this up-and-coming act. You feel their musical influences on every track. There’s no doubt that it would go down just as well in the mosh pit as it would being played at full volume at home.
