The dates for Steresonic 2015 were announced back in March, confirming the Aussie dance music mega-event would return to a one-day format this year. Things are moving quick on the Stereo front, because we now have a confirmed headliner and it’s none other than Major Lazer.
Major Lazer chief and star in his own right Diplo recently caught up with News Limited, who confirmed the producer’s collaboration with Jillionaire and Walshy Fire would headline Australia’s biggest dance music event, which kicks off later this year in November.
Diplo is one of the event’s unofficial ambassadors, having played the festival five times previously both with Major Lazer and as a DJ. The electronic dancehall trio will be here promoting their latest album, Peace Is The Mission, which has yielded several hit singles Down Under.
“In Australia, we have had a bunch of pop records that have gone platinum there before anywhere else in the world,” he tells News Limited. “We are not going out of our way to be pop, it’s just working there for us. Even my publisher looks at the Australian charts first now.”
Diplo has also seen several of his songs with Jack U, a collaboration with buddy Skrillex, scale the charts in Australia, and as far as he’s concerned it’s all down to the fact that Australians are just far hipper to the latest trends in dance and pop music than the US.
“Radio is national there, there’s no Triple J in America,” he explains. “It takes months for a song to reach the top 10 in the US; in Australia, it takes two weeks. And your pop stations are more progressive in what they play.”
“It’s only been in the last four or five years that you have seen Skrillex headlining at Coachella or DJs on the main stages,” he adds. “It’s cool that everyone has caught up to what we are doing.”
