Regardless of where you fall on the political spectrum, no matter what your opinion is on the pertinent policy issues of today, it’s undeniable that Ewen Jones, Federal Member for Herbert, has excellent taste in music.

A member of the Liberal National Party, Jones has managed secure a reputation as “Australia’s funniest politician”, according to BuzzFeed. But if his record collection is anything to go by, he may also be our hippest.

When BuzzFeed went to interview Jones about an incident involving a young woman wearing a hijab which left the MP with an understanding of white privilege, they couldn’t help but note his knowledge of contemporary Aussie music.

According to BuzzFeed scribe Mark Di Stefano, during the interview, Jones began “ranting and raving about modern music”, covering “everything from Tame Impala’s guitar solos to the new record from his favourite band, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard”.

Jones’ eldest daughter writes for Brisbane music blog Howl & Echoes and often sends her dad links to the latest buzz bands. Jones’ other daughter is apparently a “committed One Directioner” and he joked, “we have problems with her”.

In the past, Jones has tweeted his support for Tame Impala and Courtney Barnett after they cleaned up at the ARIAs and mentioned how he goes power-walking to cuts from King Gizzard’s Fill Your Lungs Float Along and Paul Kelly.

And if you think this is all a cheap ploy by a politician looking to endear himself to the younger crowd, Jones has a critical ear. “Hanging out the washing to Tame Impala’s Currents,” he once tweeted. “Not sure how I feel about this album yet.”

Jones’ music taste even helps him dictate policy. As the Townsville Bulletin reported back in December, Jones argued that music festivals like Groovin The Moo ought to be ground zero for fighting the ice epidemic.

“Wherever [young people] are taking drugs for the first time, that’s where it should be,” he said. “Having Ewen Jones or Assistant Commissioner Paul Taylor up the front there saying ‘don’t do drugs’ isn’t going to work.”

“It’s another thing when you have Tame Impala standing there saying ‘don’t do drugs’.” Considering other Australian politicians like Joe Hockey are noted Nickelback fans, we’re going to go ahead and declare Jones the Aussie MP with the best music taste.
