Fusing their big band horns with the ska rhythm, the album opener is the classic theme song from 1960s sitcom Get Smart.
The forceful horns provide a funky melodic line to the track, while collective sing along lyrics add to this joyful tune.
While they successfully cover many classic tracks, the band shines with their original tracks.
The single ‘Lygon St Meltdown’ features the vocals of Nicky Bomba and personifies the quirky character of Melbourne’s suburb. With its horn-heavy melody line and twinkling piano notes, it’s a unique and fun track.
‘Time to Wake Up’ is a relaxed song, with its typical ska rhythm. It’s bare in its use of instrument, withholding from the punchy brass lines in the other tracks but providing a laid back vibe.
“He’s A Tripper” is catchy track that with its reggae rhythm and repetitive melody that you can’t help but want to dance to. Featuring quirky lyrics such as “There was an astronaut with twisted thought who went by the name of Lee” this is surely a favourite when played live.
The album in its entirety sounds like a great set, with the energy of the orchestra’s praised live performances radiating through each track. The un-edited conversations of the band members only add to that authenticity.
Listening to the album in one sitting may prove a difficulty, clocking over an hour in its entirety. However, the Melbourne Ska Orchestra’s debut provides a funky and seamless blend of their unique ska and big band sounds.
