While they night not be visiting Australia as planned this month, Metallica seem to be gearing up to announce something big later this week.

Late last month, Aussie metalheads were undoubtedly devastated to learn that the highly-anticipated tour from thrash icons Metallica would not be going ahead as planned this month.

Originally slated to kick off next week, the band revealed that their upcoming dates would be postponed while frontman James Hetfield entered a treatment program in order to confront his struggles with addiction.

While fans were gutted – yet understanding – upon hearing this news, it appears as though things are still ticking away in the Metallica camp, with a new website teasing the announcement of something big this week.

Taking to social media earlier today, Metallica shared a link to a new website called MetallicaXX, which features little more than a timer counting down.

Currently set to wrap up on Thursday at 12pm AEDT, fans have begun to speculate that this announcement may be related to the the band’s 1999 S&M concert, given the presence of ‘XX’ in the title, which signifies the number 20 in Roman numerals.

Adding further weight to this theory is the fact that on Wednesday, Metallica fans will be treated to the opening day of the group’s S&M² concerts in theatres. Performed early last month, these two shows saw the band add the symphony to their tunes again, mixing the classical with the diabolical for one more time.

Considering that the original release date of S&M was in November of 1999, speculation is growing that this Thursday may in fact see the announcement of a special 20th anniversary edition of the iconic concert, potentially collecting the CD and DVD releases, announcing a new vinyl pressed, or being shared onto Blu-Ray for the first time.

Whatever the case, Thursday at lunch time is gearing up to be the time that our questions will all be answered.
