The new single from M83’s new album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming due out mid October, sees Anthony Gonzalez treading over fairly similar ground to the less guitar based tracks of 2008’s Saturdays = Youth. ‘Midnight City’ features plenty of the dreamy synths and unintelligible choruses you’d expect based on his track record, while also fusing his Depeche Mode template with plenty of effects and echoes.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the song is the Guru Josh-esque sax on the final chorus/outro – it appears that every electro/pop act from Cut Copy through to Chromeo has adopted this mainstay of 1991 mainstream dance as a motif in their work of late. Overall, however, it’s nice background music but unremarkable compared to some of the highlights on Saturdays = Youth such as ‘Graveyard Girl’ and ‘Kim & Jessie’. Hopefully they’ll be awaiting us when the album is released.
