On Saturday 3 November Cherry Bar co-owner and man-about-town James Young is launching a new live music venue in the New West at the Yarraville Club featuring an all-star live celebration of the 40th anniversary of The Rolling Stones ‘Exile On Main Street’ album. ToneDeaf.com.au checked in to get the goss from the horse’s mouth…

Tell us about The Yarraville Club?

Well, strictly speaking this is not the launch of a new club, but the re-invention of an existing venue. The Yarraville Club is a historic RSL that happens to have an under-utilised Function Room with a 650-capacity.

Yarraville and the surrounding New West is fast becoming the cultural hub of Melbourne, home to many creative people with creative yearnings, but it isn’t yet a hive of live music, despite the demand. My vision is to meet that demand with a new destination for music lovers who can’t afford to taxi to-and-from the city every weekend. If this goes to plan, look out in 2013!

So, what’s going on and who’s playing?

2012 is the 50th anniversary of The Rolling Stones and the 40th anniversary of what I consider to be the greatest album of all time ‘Exile On Main Street’. Earlier this year at Cherry we played host to a full-house celebration of this album with a cavalcade of local talent. This Saturday 3 November will witness a final encore return performance of this show, back due to popular demand. And, seems that you asked…

The ‘Exile’ band features Carl (Devilrock Four) Treasure on guitar, Bruce (Renee Geyer) Haymes on keys, Ben Curnow on guitar, Ryan Brown on bass, Simon (My Dynamite) Aarons on drums, Ben Marsland on Saxophone and Jack (Hunters & Collectors) Howard on trumpet. With special guest vocalists Nick Barker, Dave (Dallas Crane) Larkin, Matt (High Times) Sonic, Ashley (Even) Naylor, Pat (My Dynamite) Carmody, Ryan (Uptown Ace) Kemp, Spencer P Jones and The Wolfgramm Sisters.

Believe me, the band is fucking amazeballs! Max Crawdaddy is DJ-ing all night from 7.30pm till 1am and I’ll be the MC. There’s a classy support set from the very talented Ashley Naylor, cos his new solo album ‘High Horse’ is something special.

What is your earliest memory of The Rolling Stones? (Maybe finding them in your dads record collection)

Molly Meldrum playing ‘Faraway Eyes’ from ‘Some Girls’ on Countdown and Ron Wood did have faraway eyes…

Have there been any fights or arguments in rehearsal over who would be performing particular songs?

I basically ‘recommended’ songs to the singers thinking that would avoid fights. I was wrong. I’m not as popular as I thought I was…

What does it mean to you to be celebrating this momentous occasion in rock n roll history?

‘Exile on Main Street’ is the greatest album of all time, either you know this or you know nothing. 40 years is a landmark that had to be celebrated.

What’s your personal favourite song from the classic album ‘Exile On Main Street’?

‘Lovin Cup’….what a beautful buzz, what a beautiful buzzzzzzzz.

Who is your favourite Stones member and why?

They are like my children and I love them equally. Keef is a legend who will outlive us all. Charlie is an effortless genius on drums. Jagger is almost the best frontman ever. Ronnie Wood I adore (for The Faces too). And don’t forget Brian Jones, Mick Taylor, Bill Wyman, Daryl Jones and Ian Stewart, Nicky Hopkins, Billy Preston and Chuck Leavell, oh and Bobby Keays and Jim Price…

Where can readers get tickets?

You always ask the right questions. Tickets are $45 for dinner & show (7.30pm start) and $25 (includes booking fee) for general admission from 8.30pm, available exclusively from www.cherryrock.com.au or on the door on the night. Being the “launch” of a new venue in Yarraville with the final ever performance of this unique and brilliant local Stones’ Exile tribute I really do expect that people will have a sensational time. “What a beautiful buzz, what a beautiful buzz…”
