Proof that dynamic garage duo The Black Keys have hit the big time is not hard to come by these days.

Their latest effort, El Camino, reached number three on the ARIA Charts and has gone platinum in Canada, New Zealand, and here in Australia, and gold in the United Kingdom and the United States.

They’ve also embarked on a world tour of sold out shows filling stadiums from New York, to Munich, all the way here to Australia where they play in front of thousands of fans for their highly anticipated tour later this year.

But ticket and record sales aren’t the only measure of the success of a band, with most groups who make it that far destined for bright but short stints at stardom, and while short-lived success is nice, leaving a lasting impact and legacy is nicer.

So Dan Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney must have been chuffed when told that a group of legends in the music scene has decided to get together to record a tribute to their musical legacy.

Cover albums are usually the domain of younger bands, looking to pay tribute to older bands that often influenced their career, but given the whole industry has been turned on its proverbial head this last decade, it seems fitting that the formula should be reversed.

Black On Blues – A Tribute to The Black Keys, as the album is called according to Stereogum, will feature a number of well known musicians, such as Iggy Pop, Cream/Blind Faith drummer Ginger Baker, and modern blues luminary such as Walter Trout and Tab Benoit.

The album will be released on July 17th through Cleopatra Records, and you can ore-order a vinyl copy of the tribute collection here.

Listen below for the first taste of the album, as Iggy Pop and Ginger Baker team up to cover the Black Key’s still pretty new single ‘Lonely Boy’.
