The 56th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony reached a fiery conclusion over the weekend as a supergroup featuring Nine Inch Nails, Queens Of The Stone Age, Dave Grohl, and Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham were charged with drawing a curtain on the star-studded celebration.

Due to the ceremony running overtime however, TV broadcasters CBS were forced to pull the plug on the Grammys telecast a little early, and eating into the supergroup’s medley.

Starting with Trent Reznor leading Nine Inch Nails into ‘Copy of A’ with accompaniment from Buckingham, the performance segued into a Dave Grohl-enhanced Queens Of The Stone Age playing ‘My God Is The Sun’, but towards the tail-end of the track, a shout out for sponsors, Hilton Hotels, and a Delta Airlines commercial played over the top of Homme and co’s performance. Something that Trent Reznor was none too happy about it, as Rolling Stone reports.

Around 45 minutes after the Grammys TV broadcast cut the set early, Reznor took to twitter to blast organisers for the thrifty edit:

The Nine Inch Nails linchpin may have also been venting a little anger over missing out on a Grammy despite the band being nominated in three categories, including Hesitation Marks losing to Vampire Weekend’s Modern Vampires Of The City in the Best Alternative Music Album category (which also featured Tame Impala’s Lonerism). 

While fellow forthcoming Australian tourmates Queens Of The Stone Age also missed out on Grammy gongs, Dave Grohl did manage to score a pair of golden statuettes thanks to Sound City. The first for Best Rock Song with ‘Cut Me Some Slack’ – his ‘Sirvana’ collaboration with Sir Paul McCartney and former members of Nirvana, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear – and for Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media for the Sound City album (which also featured Grohl, Reznor, and QOTSA frontman Joshua Homme jamming together on ‘Mantra’).

The grand NIN/QOTSA finale was also the last in a series of superstar collaborations during the Grammys broadcast – starting with Beyoncé and Jay Z performing ‘Drunk In Love’, Daft Punk teaming up with Pharrell, Nile Rodgers, and Stevie Wonder, and a mini-Beatles reunion between Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.

Along with Tame Impala, Aussie fans’ hopes for Grammy glory were also dashed when Keith Urban and Hiatus Kaiyote missed out on awards in their respective fields. The latter Melbourne future soul outfit were nominated in the Best RnB Performance category for their track ‘Nakamarra’ featuring Q-Tip – even performing the tune live at the event’s live pre-telecast – but lost out to jazz fusion group Snarky Puppy, to which they humbly conceded victory in a tweet.
