Tame Impala’s US domination is set to continue, following on from cracking the US top 40 charts and an appearance on American late night television next week, comes the unveiling of the latest Blackberry ad which features their hit single ‘Elephant’. American audiences might already be familiar with the single as Tame Impala are currently on tour in the US, playing dates around the country through ’til May.
As TV Ad Music reports, the clever ad launches the company’s new Z10 smartphone, their re-entry into the market. The new ad shows various individuals moving along in situations from the ordinary to the obscene (flying carpet over burning palace anyone?), whilst effortlessly connecting on their Blackberries, all as Tame Impala’s psychedelic indie rock plays in the background.
The new ad campaign will launch here and in the US in early March but, as Music Network‘s Industrial Strength column points out, it’s already created a buzz in the UK and Canada with Tame Impala’s record sales enjoying a spike.
This follows on from the announcement that the Perth outfit are booked to play on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on February 18th to kickstart a largely sold out US tour.
Acclaimed second album Lonerism has already cracked the US top 40 with a debut at #34. They’ve also added seven shows to their upcoming tour to cope with demand.
They’ll be touring extensively around the States in February and March, before returning to our shores for the Groovin’ The Moo regional festival. More US dates are planned for May and June with Tame Impala set on breaking into the US market.
Could the Blackberry ad do for Tame Impala what the iPod did for Jet?
The Aussie late night television invasion is rife with rock five piece Gold Fields earning a spot on Jimmy Kimmel Live on February 27th, it’s a boon for both Aussie bands, and considering the Grammy award winning Gotye, also got his big break on US television with performances on Saturday Night Live, American Idol and Jimmy Kimmel Live, both Gold Fields and Tame Impala could look set to do the same in 2013.
Melbourne rockers Jet also got their big break from a commercial thanks to Apple. In 2003, their single ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl’ received worldwide exposure as the featured track on Apple’s iPod ad. The catchy song launched the band into international stardom with the single cracking the top 10 in the US. Could the Blackberry ad do for Tame Impala what the iPod did for Jet?
Tame Impala will be hoping to follow on from the recent success of Gotye in the US. With help from a Blackberry ad, an appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and a near sold out US tour, they’re certainly set to take the States by storm.
