On October 23rd 1998, Britney Spears officially released her debut single ‘…Baby One More Time‘ on Jive Records. It is now one of the best selling singles of all time, having sold over 10 million copies worldwide.

It hit #1 in 18 countries, propelling the teenager to super-stardom, and changed the face of karaoke performances forever in the process.

Pop music dynamo Max Martin co-wrote and produced the hit, which became his first number-one single. He has since gone on to write and co-write 21 additional Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles.

Despite being 20 years old, the music video continues to inspire instantly recognisable costumes at parties and Halloween events — even when the wearer is the same age (or younger) than the video itself.

Although by Nigel Dick, the final concept of the video has been attributed to Spears herself a number of times. The original plan was to have the video in a cartoon-style environment, but Spears pushed for the video to be set in a school so it would “reflect the lives of her fans.” This, as well as the dance scenes and iconic schoolgirl outfit were also ideas requested by the 16-year old singer.

The video was filmed at Venice High School in Los Angeles, the same school used in ‘Grease’ and a number of other music videos.
