Aussie music legends the Sunnyboys have returned the exceptional ‘Can’t You Stop’, their first new song in almost 30 years.
Just two weeks ago, we received word that Sydney’s Sunnyboys would be hitting the road next year to celebrate their 40th anniversary.
Having formed back in 1980 and featuring Jeremy and Peter Oxley alongside Bil Bilson and Richard Burgman, the group became firm favourites of the live scene, releasing their phenomenal Lobby Loyde-produced, self-titled debut the following year.
As the years continued, the existence of the Sunnyboys was sporadic at best, with their entire career featuring only about 12 solid years spent together, and no new albums being released since 1989’s Wildcat.
However, the band’s 40th anniversary announcement brought with it the revelation that they’ll also be delivering Sunnyboys 40, a collection of tracks that features the group’s eponymous debut 7″ from 1980 along with four new tracks – their first in decades.
“You can’t keep a good band down,” explained Jeremy Oxley. “These new and revitalised songs take it back to the reason behind the band in the first instance.
Now, following its appearance on radio yesterday, the Sunnyboys have shared their first new track from the collection, the exhilarating ‘Can’t You Stop’.

A slick, catchy track that is pure Sunnyboys, ‘Can’t You Stop’ makes it sound as if no time has passed at all, with their power-pop riffs, powerful delivery, and smart songwriting serving as a long-awaited return from the group.
“‘Can’t You Stop’ is classic Sunnyboys,” explained Peter Oxley of the new song. “We had a lot of fun recording this song.
“From the opening riff to Jeremy’s beautiful melodic guitar lines and our glorious vocal harmonies. We thought, ‘wow, this sounds just like us’.”
If you’re liking what you’re hearing, pre-orders for Sunnyboys 40 are available now, ahead of its release on November 29th. The new collection will be released on CD, cassette, and digital platforms, with the vinyl version featuring a hard cover 12 page 30cm x 30cm photo essay of the band.
The Sunnyboys will also be hitting the road next February, performing with Melbourne’s Painters And Dockers for their Victorian shows, and Rocket Science for Sydney’s Twilight At Taronga, as they bring their old and new favourites to fans of all ages.
