Having spent over a year tucked away in their studio in the wilderness honing their long-awaited debut album Be Kind To Yourself, Willow Beats finally return with their brand new single ‘Special’, ahead of the album’s release later this month.

Currently racking up spins on triple j, ‘Special’ is a glimmering piece of electro pop, Kalyani’s dulcet vox swaying back and forth across Narayana’s signature beats – and it’s possibly the duo’s most uplifting work to date.

The accompanying clip is equally sunny, an explosion of animated colours punctuated by Kalyani and her dance crew, all put together by director Jackson Lapsley Scott.

“The animation is all rotoscoped – so we’d film the band, bring that footage into Photoshop, hand trace over every
frame, colour it in, add elements, and put it in an invented 3D environment,” he tells us. “Declan and Keanu’s [the animators] art skills are all over this project.”

“Making this video was the best time I have ever had on a shoot,” Kalyani adds. “Jackson’s decision-making throughout the day was guided by creating a fun and relaxed environment, and it felt like shooting the coolest kids TV show – we were dancing and finger painting all day.”

After playing a set at this year’s Splendour, the pair are eager to get back on the road, and will have the perfect opportunity when they head out on tour with Tash Sultana, starting November 18.

‘Special’ is available now, and Be Kind To Yourself is out November 24 – you can pre-order a copy right here.
