Roger Waters is back in full-swing putting together his first solo album in a quarter of a century, and he is not keeping hi mouth shut when it comes to the work of his contemporaries – least of all Nobel Prize winner Bob Dylan.
In a recent chat with Billboard, the Pink Floyd icon has opened fire at Dylan’s recent work – particularly his covers of Frank Sinatra and other American standards, of which he’s now made at least three albums’ worth. While Waters’ new album deals with topics of war, much like his earlier work, he feels that the formerly-political Dylan has lost sight of what made him great to begin with.
“I haven’t got time to do an album of Frank Sinatra covers,” he began. “Bob Dylan, for instance, which is weird. You go, “Fuck me Bob, what is wrong with you? Why would you do that?”
“I guess it’s because he can’t bear the thought of not being on the road and he couldn’t think of anything else to do. I can’t believe he really has an affinity for all that schlock. But maybe he does.”
It’s clearly not the life Rog would choose for himself, but we don’t think that’s what he had in mind when he named his new record. ‘Is This The Life We Really Want?’ will be out Friday June 2.
