As reported yesterday, Skrillex teamed up with his pre-EDM-king emo band From First To Last and released their first song in a decade, the rousing ‘Make War’.
The song was received positively, but the artwork for the single – featuring a peach wrapped in barbed wire, because symbolism and that – has been slammed for apparently ripping off the cover of San Fran band Culture Abuse’s 2016 album Peach, which also features a peach and a wire fence (though no barbs, it must be pointed out). In addition, both feature similar font type and placement, and a peach-coloured background.
After this was pointed out to Culture Abuse, they responded by tweeting lyrics to Bob Marley’s ‘Small Axe’: “If you are the big tree, we are the small axe, sharpened to cut you down. Ready to cut you down”, later adding, “Our music & our art means everything to us. we do this out of pure passion. Not for money, not for approval. nothing will stop us.”
Skrillex has since responded with a statement on Twitter, reading: “Just wanted to convey we were unaware of the band Culture Abuse’s cover art with a peach similar to ours for From First to Last that we released yesterday. It was a complete coincidence, and we would never disrespect or appropriate another artist’s work. Shoutout to Culture Abuse, and as a positive to come from this, hopefully people will go check out their music and show them some love.”
While the similarities certainly appear to be coincidental (and quite slight, really), Skrillex has made a good point – so go listen to Peach over on their BandCamp page, whydoncha?
