From where we were sitting, it seemed as though much of the excitement surrounding this morning’s Splendour In The Grass 2016 lineup announcement was all down to just one band, which is saying something when you consider the calibre of the roster.

After years of rumours and speculation, The Avalanches, whose last DJ set was in 2011 and who last performed live all the way back in 2007, will reunite on stage for a live set at Splendour In The Grass, as well as additional reunion shows.

Before the Since I Left You masterminds make their way to explode heads and create serious FOMO in Byron Bay this July, they’ll play warm-up shows at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound festival and London’s Field Day in June.

The band got fans in a buzz yesterday when they suddenly updated their online channels — their website, Facebook, SoundCloud, Twitter, and newly minted Instagram — with a mysterious image featuring a golden embroidered butterfly.

The updates came months after Modular Recordings, the band’s label, told fans to “stand by for news on forthcoming releases from Movement, Bag Raiders and The Avalanches” and after Danny Brown, reportedly a collaborator on the band’s new album, sang the recording’s praises.

Speaking to Matt and Alex on triple j this morning, station music director Richard Kingsmill confirmed the Avalanches’ Splendour appearance will be a live performance and not a DJ set and suggested a new album could well be on its way.

The follow-up to the legendary, universally acclaimed Since I Left You has reportedly been in production since 2005, which means it’s officially surpassed the 10-year record set by Guns N’ Roses for being the longest recorded album.
