The Avalanches have released their latest single, “Far Away”, ahead of an intimate pop-up show in Sydney tomorrow night.
Featuring British rapper and producer John Glacier and Tunisian producer Khadija Al Hanafi, the track is the latest preview of the Australian electronic group’s forthcoming album, No Bad Memories, due out October 16th.
The release comes as The Avalanches prepare to take over Sydney’s Club 77 on Thursday night, where they’ll be joined by Moktar, Jonoma, and Reenie from 8pm. See here for details.
“Far Away” arrives today with a video shot in Tokyo and Minakami in December 2025 using a 2001 Sony Handycam. Filmed in the now-obsolete MiniDV PAL format, the footage documents a pre-production road trip and recording sessions in Japan, tying into the technology and memory themes the group have been exploring throughout 2026.
“We spent a beautiful London summer working on a number of tracks with John, this track in particular captures that blissed out lysergic feeling of dusty evening light, soaking up music with friends as the light filters through the trees and feeling as if we’re living in a shared dream,” the Avalanches said of the collaboration.
Robbie Chater also praised Al Hanafi’s approach to sampling, with the producer appearing across several tracks on the forthcoming record. “Her knack for flipping a sample completely re-inspired me, it’s been a joy collaborating with Khadija on this album,” he said.
The new single follows “Can’t Get Over Losing You” featuring Portraits of Tracy, “Blue Shadows” with Karen O, “Every Single Weekend” with Jamie xx, and “Together” featuring Nikki Nair, Jessy Lanza, and Prentiss.
The Avalanches revealed the sprawling 31-song No Bad Memories tracklist last week, with Rivers Cuomo, Panda Bear, Barry Can’t Swim, Mike Patton, Carly Simon, Vegyn, Ryoji Ikeda and Loaded Honey also among the album’s extensive list of collaborators.
The record will mark the Melbourne-formed group’s first album since 2020’s We Will Always Love You, following their landmark debut Since I Left You and 2016 follow-up Wildflower.
The Avalanches have also been busy on the live front, recently appearing at Primavera Sound Barcelona and playing their first-ever show in Mexico. Further international dates are scheduled for New York and London later this year.
