The Cure featured a little bit of a lineup change on Sunday, with bassist Simon Gallup being replaced by his son at Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival.

Over the weekend, the 2019 edition of Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival took place at the Naeba Ski Resort. Headlined by the likes of The Chemical Brothers, Sia, and The Cure, it was something of a musical feast for fans the world over.

Sadly, The Cure’s Sunday night headline slot was met with a bit of a lineup reshuffle, with the band taking to social media this morning to reveal that bassist Simon Gallup would be unable to play due to a “serious personal situation”.

“A serious personal situation affecting our bassist Simon arose after the Paléo Festival show on Thursday, and as a consequence Simon was unable to travel with us to Japan,” the group explained.

However, citing a reluctance to disappoint their eager fans, The Cure revealed that Gallup’s son Eden would instead be filling his dad’s shoes for the show.

“After much discussion, we decided to go ahead with our ‘Fuji Festival’ headline on Sunday, with a very brave and very excellent Eden Gallup filling in on bass!” the band wrote.

“We are all very grateful to Ed for reaching out across the generational divide to help us out, and join him in welcoming his dad back for our seven remaining summer festival shows.”

Having been a constant member of the group since 1979 (and a couple of years in the early ’80s), Simon Gallup is the longest-tenured member of The Cure apart from founding member Robert Smith.

At this stage, there’s no word as to the specific cause of Gallup’s absence from the Fuji Rock Festival, though we hope it’s nothing too serious.
