It’s that time of year where all of us avid music obsessors reflect on what a year 2014 was for new releases. While we excitedly await the results of our readers poll (which you can still vote right here), Richard Kingsmill alongside a few others at Triple J have put together their Top 10 Albums of 2014.
Kingsmill, alongside fellow leading tastemaker Zan Rowe have some pretty varied lists, interestingly only agreeing on Australian outfit Total Control for their killer record Typical System and unsurprisingly, Triple J Album Of The Year Award Winner, Chet Faker for Built On Glass.
There are multiple mentions of worldwide frontrunners such as The War On Drugs for their immersive neo-psych record Lost In A Dream as well as bizarre adversary Sun Kil Moon for his mind-blowing, dark folk record Benji, not to mention newcomers like the Aussie bound FKA Twigs for LP1 and Caribou’s Our Love.
On the Aussie front, we see multiple entries for hiphoppers Thundamentals and Hilltop Hoods, not to mention a healthy cut of our homegrown talent topping the lists in both the metal and punk categories.
Comparing the radio station’s results versus listeners showed a huge difference, with listeners placing a heavy appreciation for Aussie releases in 2014, with a staggering 8/10 being voting in the top 10.
