Given that the internet practically exploded when news broke that the surviving members of Nirvana would be performing a female-fronted medley of hits for their Rock And Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, fans have already seen some footage of what went down. But not like this.
HBO were on hand to film the entire historic performance and is set to air the entirety of this year’s Rock And Roll Hall of Fame ceremony on Saturday 31st May. Ahead of the broadcast, they’ve dropped a lovely little teaser for the high-def TV event; a snatch of ‘Lithium’, as performed by recent Australian visitor, St. Vincent (who’s Sydney Opera House debut had our reviewer quizzing if she was the best live performer of 2014).
The internet has already treated fans to St. Vincent covering the Nirvana classic with her own band, as well as rough smartphone footage from the New York induction, but even with such a short taste, the full resolution gives you the full impact of what’s really happening, with every strand of Annie Clark’s white witch hair and the sweaty visage of Grohl hammering his kit with full force.
The full HBO feature screening on Saturday 31st May (and hopefully online soon after) will also star, of course, Lorde, Joan Jett, and Kim Gordon all filling in for Kurt with Grohl, Novoselic, and Pat Smear. (Now if only we could get HD footage of that secret after-party show.)
There’ll also be the epic live set from Bruce Springsteen with his 2014 inductees the E Street Band, Peter Gabriel’s duet with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, plus all the acceptance speeches from KISS, Hall & Oates, Linda Ronstadt, Cat Stevens, and the rest of the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame inductees.

The HBO/Nirvana connection doesn’t stop there, Dave Grohl and his fellow Foo Fighters are also set to start in a new television series for the Game Of Thrones-broadcasters based around the making of the band’s forthcoming eighth studio album.
Described as a “love letter to the history of American music,” the eight episode series follows the Foos as they visit landmark US cities and their historic recordings studios, complete with an all-star guest list that features Gary Clark Jr, Buddy Guy, Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen, KISS frontman Paul Stanley, Australian-bound Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh, and more.
